Change Gonna Come

I’m sure we have all heard the phrases “the only thing that is constant is change” or “change is inevitable.” This would propose the idea that you can’t avoid change in life. Season’s change, weather changes, times change, and even people change. Wait a minute, you must be careful with that last one. Do people really change? I’d argue that people can go thru changes, but it doesn’t mean they’ve changed.

When I reflect over my own life, I’d like to think that I’ve progressed over the years. With all the life experiences I’ve had and all the mistakes I’ve made, hopefully I’ve changed for the better. Some might look at me and not agree with that assessment. I know a few ex-girlfriends that would probably say that I’m still the same asshole they dated back in the day. Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. The truth of the matter is that I’ve experienced growth at many levels of my life, and with that growth comes change.

Now there are some people that don’t change and don’t evolve in life. I know you can think of someone you grew up with that is still doing the same things they were doing when they were younger. Some people get stuck in a rut and don’t even realize it because they lack exposure to things that will force them to change. Change can be difficult for some people, and they would rather remain in the comfort of their current existence. You can probably also think of that person that you have been hoping and praying for changes in their life because of what they mean to you. One thing I’ve learned, you can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do. The only movement you can affect is your own, and how you deal with the ones that refuse to move with you. Sometimes you must make tough decisions and move on from these people, especially if they’re hindering your growth and happiness. MJG once said it best in a song, “it’s hard but it’s fair.”

With all that said, is change really inevitable? I still say yes. Life moves on whether you like it or not. Either you’re going to adjust and pivot, or risk getting left in the dust of progression. We can’t halt progress, no matter how much we may like things in their status quo. You can either fight it or embrace it, but a change is gonna come.

As always,

Kings Can Move On Y’all
